Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

Image:Imp_symb.png edit

Image deletion warning Image:Imp_symb.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

COA of Israeli municipalities edit

Could you please explain your position on treating reproductions of COA of Israeli municipalities as part of the Israeli FOP principle? Drork (talk) 20:43, 1 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for the reply on my talk page. This whole issue is very intriguing because in practice people use this symbols freely and no one minds, except certain cases of clear misuse (BTW, I once complained to my municipality about an organization that was using its COA as if it were acting on behalf of the municipality, and they just issued a clarification that they have no relations with him. They didn't press charges). The law itself is very unclear about COA copyrights, but it does say explicitly that sketching or reproducing a work placed in a public place is okay. So if you say nothing about COA copyrights, and COA are naturally placed in public places, then we have a logic conclusion. However, if I asked a lawyer about it, he'd think I lost my mind. Hello Ynhockey!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 18:03, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Good day, Ynhockey, I have some problems with your aministrative map of Israel. 1. What is the name of divisions, municipalities or other? 2. Where I can find the name of them? On the administrative map from Survey of Israel is in hebriew. One solution is to take them from a road or topography map of Israel but it takes more time. 3. On Southern district that divisions is crossing the border of regions. It is possible to find this situation in the rest of country. Is it possible that the regions not be a administrative divisions. Is that divisions the next level of administrative divisions after subdistricts?

Picture of the Year 2013 R1 Announcement edit

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open! edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on 7 February 2014. Click here to learn more and vote »

Update is needed for the Israeli Railway Map, because Netivot is now connected to the railway line to Sderot edit

Hello.

The Israeli Railway Map needs to be updated, because Netivot is now connected to the railway line to Sderot with the opening of the Netivot train station on Sunday 15 February 2015 (almost exactly one year after the opening of the Sderot train station on 14 February, 2014). The railway line between Sderot and Netivot needs to be colored in blue.

Thank you.

PS: Could you create an additional railway map of Israel, again showing Israel with its post-1967 borders but without Sinai, in order to enlarge the map of Israel, because the fonts used for the place names are too small even with the largest zooming of the image.

Thank you.

Pontifical Biblical Institute in WLM edit

Hi, I'm writing to you as point of contact for WLM IL. I see that d:Q951184 is in Rome but has an Israelian WLM identificator: I presume it's a mistake due to the fact that there is also a branch in Jerusalem (but this Wikidata item has Italian coordinates). If this is the case I'd like to disambiguate that, because otherwise it shows up in the monument lists of WLM Italy (they are automatically generated from Wikidata). - Laurentius (talk) 09:07, 3 September 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Laurentius: Hi, not sure which data points you need to disambiguate, but the monument has the code of 2-3000-505 in the Israeli competition, and the coordinates are: 31°46′31″N 35°13′23″E. —Ynhockey (talk) 09:34, 3 September 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, I found d:Q55955575 which is the branch in Jerusalem, matching those coordinates - I moved the WLM id there. - Laurentius (talk) 11:08, 3 September 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I noticed that you left a message at my talk page, and you're right: looking at videos of the Carmelit re-opening (specially this video at 4:51 mark), it seems that the "Masada" station is spelled like the way you say (מסדה). I made the correction to the Hebrew name at the image. Thanks for the message! --Sfs90 (talk) 17:55, 9 November 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Ynhockey, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

File:Idf ordnance corps.svg edit

File:Idf ordnance corps.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Important message for file movers edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Support Good quality. Beautiful! Some traces of CAs at the branches and some noise in the shadows, but IMHO not important given the resolution and the overall quality. --Aristeas 10:48, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.

Please fill in this short survey and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2020.

Kind regards,

Category:Restaurants_in_Herzliya edit

Restaurants in Herzliya has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Comments A bit hazy. Could you apply some dehazing? --Tuxyso 19:32, 8 April 2021 (UTC)Because of the dew it is not clearly (the white rings at the base of antannae-Glieder also being weak), but I would say there is no white border along the elytral sutura, so it won't be cardui. I would say it is Agapanthia cynarae, but I would not bet on it. There is a key hereDoneYnhockey 13:51, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open! edit

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on 1 May 2023, 23:59:59 UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
