Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.--EugeneZelenko 14:32, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? Thank you. --Siebrand 19:16, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
Proszę opisuj grafiki[edit]
Zauważyłem, że załadowałeś [[:{{{1}}}]] i pomyślałem, aby zwrócić Ci uwagę na często popełniany błąd.
Dobrze byłoby, gdybyś dodawał szerszy opis do załadowanych grafik. Dziękuję, i miłego edytowania! Patstuart 05:04, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:Bermuda-Coat-of-Arms.jpg[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Bermuda-Coat-of-Arms.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Please provide a clear reason or source when tagging copyright violations. I can't delete them until this is done. — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 02:17, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Hurricane Irene Screenshot This item comes under the Fair use, a limitation and exception to the exclusive right granted by copyright law to the author of a creative work, is a doctrine in United States copyright law that allows limited use of copyrighted material without acquiring permission from the rights holders. Examples of fair use include commentary, criticism, news reporting, research, teaching. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use
The purpose of the picture is to show the difference between media news reports of the Hurricane winds and the actual winds as reported by the Buoy data. It also shows and teaches the public where they can find accurate information on their own.
Next the picture is just a small part of the whole:http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html Section 107 also sets out four factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair:
The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes The nature of the copyrighted work The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
This image is in the public domain because it was stored on the web servers of the U.S. National Weather Service. NWS-created images are automatically public domain since the NWS is a part of the US government
Your FoP-Greece DRs[edit]
Please do not mis-use Commons to prove a point, for the majority of these images the use of {{NoFoP-Greece}} would have been more than enough as a warning. --Denniss (talk) 17:11, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Tsarnaev maps[edit]
Hi, I can see the maps are (to be) deleted. I guess the fact that I created them in good faith does not help. :P
I was assuming that using a screenshot of a Google map and making the rest - the much bigger part - of it myself would be fair use (actually, both were accepted by some editor with reviewer rights). Wouldn't it be?
If it is not, how about making a similar map using OpenStreetMap?

Paris attack map[edit]
Hi Veggies, thanks for uploading File:Parisattacks.png. Have you consider preparing a version of the same map with the Stade de France as an inset? See this example from Le Monde. I think that would make it way more readable at a small scale (also consider the top image is used as a background on the WIkipedia apps). Keep up the good work. --DarTar (talk) 16:30, 14 November 2015 (UTC)
- @DarTar: I have uploaded a divided version as File:November-2015-Paris-Attacks-Divided-Map.png. Let me know if this works for you. Personally, I prefer using the undivided version because it lets the reader see the city attacks in scale. However, it does hog a lot of vertical article space. -- Veggies (talk) 11:44, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Veggies: I think the square version works better. FWIW many projects are now adopting a version of the map originally designed by User:Chumwa for German Wikipedia.--DarTar (talk) 17:34, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
Hi, I think you missed one of the six places of attacks. Here (newspaper Le Monde), you can see there's been deux groups of attacks at Saint-Denis : rue Jules-Rimet and rue de la cokerie (should be number 2 in you map). Thanks a lot. Chris93 (talk) 01:27, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
Brussels bombings map[edit]
Hi Veggies. Could you make the numbers larger on this map? Ideally so they could be more legible at 260px for use in the infobox? Thanks, Rob984 (talk) 10:31, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

Autopatrol given[edit]
Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, the possibility to overwrite files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. GPSLeo (talk) 07:24, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
