File:Jeremy Boxen at the Gale Anne Hurd Masterclass (6829984489).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

A cup of coffee for you![edit]

Thanks for the help! the speedy deletion was bullshit so i didnt bother contesting.

as for the cat and the images, i have to say sorry. i thought i had seen a photo of this anita lee on commons so i changed it, but then i realised there is currently no free image available. the two photos i moved were another anita lee who's a producer for NFB Canada. i cant pinpoint her in wikidata so i have not created another cat for her. Can you please explain your block[edit]

You need to explain yourself to the commons and greater Wiki community. Since you have been blocked at english Wikipedia we can apply your logic regarding blocks: any BLP image posted to commons should be deleted as clearly you can't be trusted! —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2607:FEA8:2D20:10CE:4D9C:D340:C7B5:6393 (talk) 12:32, 31 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:87j317 supplement 3 K&I Bridge diagram from Corps of Engineers, 1935 (8178969309).jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Thanks for uploading File:Burning container ship Hyundai Fortune yemin-ship-76682.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

Graders? Road graders?[edit]

May I ask, what is the difference between Category:Graders and Category:Road graders?--Kai3952 (talk) 13:33, 22 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • I am not really an expert in earth moving machinery, although Category:Road graders is far from the first category I started. Having said that, it is my impression that only some graders are used to prepare roads, and that they may be used in other context, including open-pit mining.
  • Did you see I started that category eight years ago?
  • If you start a broader discussion please give me a heads-up. Geo Swan (talk) 23:30, 23 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Well, I'm not an expert either, but at least I have the right to know what is the difference between grader and road grader. As far as I know I assume all road graders look no different in appearance from an ordinary grader. By contrast, if there is no difference in appearance between them, how do we know if the picture we see is "ordinary grader" or "road grader"?--Kai3952 (talk) 10:25, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Plan of the Subdivision of Part of Lot 35, Con. II from Bay, Township of York. Unwin, Browne & Sankey -b.jpg.

Thank you.

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

Hazaras[edit]

Hello. Not Haraza in the US Army ethnolinguistic map of Afghanistan https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File_talk:US_Army_ethnolinguistic_map_of_Afghanistan_--_circa_2001-09.jpg --Wisdood (talk) 15:24, 20 September 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Wisdood I live in Canada. I am amused by maps of the French possessions in the North America. You can find lots of maps that show the French possessions controlling Quebec, Acadia, Lauisiana, but the entire Mississippi watershed, and all the land that drained inot Hudson Bay, including even Baffin Island. The French possessions had a much sparser distribution of Europeans than the English possessions. Most Native Americans on the upper reaches of the tributaries to the Mississippi never met a Frenchman, let alone had a French administrator collecting taxes, or telling them what to do. France and England did trade some very sparsely settled forts back and forth on the lower half of Hudson's Bay, but only for some decades in the 17th century. They never established any settlements on Baffin Island.
Some have argued for the deletion of these inaccurate maps. I disagree. They are fantasy maps, like maps of Tolkien's Middle Earth.
It is up to the contributors at the various wikipedias to make user they are careful not to repsreent those fantasy maps as accurate.
US officials misspelled Hazara as Haraza on an official map? I'd argue against deleetion. Have you considered putting your correction in the description on the image page? Or have you considered preparing an alternate version where you figure out how to edit out Haraza, and replace it with Hazara? Or figure out someone who on the skills to make those edits, and talk them into making it? Geo Swan (talk) 06:23, 21 September 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
File:DIA Af-Pak wanted posters, October 2006.pdf has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Thank you.

Duke Ellington photo date[edit]

Good day. Regarding File:Jitterbugs, Duke Ellington (27795121453).jpg, the source states the date is 1938, but you categorized it as 1944. Do you have some information correcting the date, or was that a typo? I'm sorry to advise you that this file has been speedy-deleted as a recreation of previously-deleted content. See Commons:Deletion requests/File:Romania-1170 - Palace of the Parliament (7557749966).jpg for the previous deletion discussion. Note that there is no freedom of panorama in Romania so any images of recent buildings – this one was designed in the 1980s – need permission of the architect as well as the photographer. If you feel this discussion fell into error, you can lodge a request for undeletion. As a courtesy I would appreciate you notifying me on my talk page if you choose to do that.

Hi. I saw you uploaded a lot of images on Commons, including this one about the Philippine-American War. Can you upload a picture of an American concentration camp during the same war? • User:Lotje I don't buy most books I snip pictures from, but it turns out I bought this one. So, I was able to go back and check. Yes, your guess was correct, and I will update the description template. The caption says: "TTC-PC-33 \nPassengers scramble to board Yonge Street 'Witt' Train, northbound at King, following the greatest snowfall in Toronto's 110 year history."
Thanks for your question. It is good to get things right.

  • Done. I had already included the original caption. That was a big clue, "110 year history..." The city's name was changed to Toronto in 1834. Thanks again. Geo Swan (int:Talkpagelinktext) 07:39, 27 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    • A few years ago (maybe five years ago...) parochial Toronto boosters started to claim Toronto was the 4th largest city in North America. Mexico City is the largest. LA and NYC being the 2nd and 3rd, or 3rd and 2nd. For a long time Chicago was considered the 4th largest.

I consider this claim an embarrassment. Like all modern cities both Toronto and Chicago are surrounded by constellations of satellite cities. Someone studying the cities from satellite photos would find it impossible, or at least very difficult, to determine the boundary between the official cities, and their satellites.

What happened was, at a certain point, the official population of the official Toronto began to exceed the official population of official Chicago. However, it seems that the population of the Greater Chicago Area almost certainly still exceeds the population of the Greater Toronto Area.

Do the people of Chicago care? Thank goodness, they have probably never heard this parochial claim.

      Toronto skyline, from my roof

What does seem to be true, and is not widely reported, is that Toronto, and some other Canadian cities, like Calgary, have continued to grow, while, following the collapse of the housing mortgage bubble in 2008, growth in American cities slowed down. Because building construction is an important industry, people count the number of high-rise construction cranes for each city. And, for a long time, more than a dozen years now, Toronto has had more high rise construction cranes than NYC. A year or so ago I read that Toronto had more high-rise construction cranes than LA and NYC put together. Calgary had more cranes than either LA or NYC. I can take pictures from the roof of my 10 story building, and there hasn't been a time in the last dozen years where there wasn't at least a dozen cranes visible to me.

Mind you, NYC cranes might be taller. I dunno.

Pessimistic smarty-pants keep predicting that Toronto's housing bubble has to eventually collapse. I am sure they are correct, yet I wonder how embarrassing it is for them that the collapse they keep predicting is right around the corner never happens?

What is the explanation? Conservative wealthy foreigners, who don't believe in investing in stocks and bonds, who do believe in investing in real estate. Apparently, in a global world, if you believe real estate is the best investment, but you don't believe in investing in the real estate of your own country, you invest in the real estate of a city with a great reputation, and, apparently, Toronto's reputation out-strips all those US cities. Tiff files[edit]

Hi Geo, Just to let you know rather than cropping tiff files, its better to either get the jpg version from the institution and upload that, or if it doesn't have one use GIMP to export the file to jpg and load that. Tiff files are reference files they are overlarge and cumbersome for websites, and we prefer not to use them. Jpeg files load faster and scale better. Cheers. Changes to author field[edit]

Hi GeoSwan,

Can you please help to clarify a little the reason for which you changed in 2021 the author field information that the uploader had provided in 2011 in a few files such as for example [4] or [5]? Was it a mistake? Could the change have resulted from a confusion about two persons of the same name? Or was it at the request of the user or with his consent? Or following some independent finding? This could have an incidence on a current deletion request. Thank you in advance for any light you can bring on this matter. -- Asclepias (int:Talkpagelinktext) 17:20, 18 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Adamant1[edit]

Just a request, and with absolutely no suggestion that this is a one-sided matter: could you please try, when engaging with User:Adamant1, to keep your remarks to statements about the issue at hand, not his character or qualifications? It would go a lot smoother. - Jmabel ! talk 18:56, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Jmabel, it sounds like you may be encouraging me to treat Adamant1 with kid gloves, because they are unusually apt to mistakenly interpret fair, civil, collegial comments and questions about his or her edits as if they were personal attacks. Clarification please. Is that what you are suggesting?
  • If that is what you are suggesting, well, I am not sure that is a good idea.

I think Adamant1 is a contributor who generally does good work. I think their recent work on challenging questionable logos looked like good work.

But, when they do questionable work, themselves, I think that merits civil and collegial questions and comments.

What happens to contributors whose work is generally good, but who also have blind spots, weaknesses, when the people who notice their lapses treat them with kid gloves?

The tune out the kid-glove advice. They ignore it. Their lapses continue to bug people. I think what then happens is that frustrations build up, over those (unchallenged) lapses, to the point there is an avoidable over-reaction, like sanctions, or blocks.

I think it is far better for the individual, and for the project, if those who notice their lapses make a good faith effort to spell them out, prior to the avoidable over-reaction of sanctions, or blocks. Geo Swan (int:Talkpagelinktext) 20:39, 2 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    • No, I'm not suggesting "kid gloves". I'm saying that unless the context is specifically a discussion on (say) AN/U about his character or qualifications, stick to the substance of the matter rather than his character/qualifications. If he's wrong, absolutely say he's wrong, but don't say he's ignorant or duplicitous. This is a pretty general rule, but I haven't seen you do that with other established users. (And I'm glad to see that you acknowledge that his work is generally good, as certainly is yours.) - Jmabel ! talk 21:07, 2 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Cough cough. I said I'm fine with honest mistakes. That said, I find it extremely hard to believe that him repeating I'm not an expert on ships right after you told him not to comment on my qualifications was one though. --Adamant1 (int:Talkpagelinktext) 21:33, 2 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      • Note: Adamant1 stated or implied I was dishonest, multiple times. I don't think I ever stated or implied he or she was dishonest, just mistaken.
      • WRT "qualifications", I think the record of the Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Photographs from David Adamec discussion showed terrible disrespect to the community, by telling them they should use tineye to confirm his hunch that the 36 images included copyright violations. When I did check for myself I found that his or her hunch wasn't valid for even one of the images.

Is this what you mean by "qualifications"? I'd call it "competency". They did not seem to have the competency to interpret tineye results. It was as if they thought that if tineye found other instances of the image that proved that the commons versions were copyright violations, without considering that the other sites might have copied the image from the commons. One has to check the date found on tineye images. Which Adamant1 wasn't doing.

I said I didn't think Adamant1 should use tineye in nominating files as copyright violations, unless he or she learns how to use it properly. I stand by that, even if Adamant1 thinks it was mean of me to say so. Geo Swan (int:Talkpagelinktext) 22:06, 2 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The TinEye thing wasn't great and I definitely could have handled the DR better. People make mistakes and DRs are kept sometimes though. That's life. I'm learning how to do this as I go along just like everyone else is. It definitely doesn't warrant you making comments about my qualifications and character for a month straight. Regardless, all I want is for the personal comments to end. That's it. I don't think it's that unreasonable of a request either. Especially since it's a general rule not to comment on someone's qualifications or character anyway and an administrator has asked you to stop once already. --Adamant1 (int:Talkpagelinktext) 23:28, 2 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
