Files in Category:SOHO images edit

I really hate to do this … Per Commons:Deletion requests/File:Comet ISON - SOHO LASCO C3 trajectory.gif. Most of these are tagged {{PD-NASA}}, which contains an explicit warning against SOHO images, because the copyright is being shared between NASA and other organizations such as ESA. Commons:Licensing requires images to be free to use for anyone for any purpose, including commercial use. This is not covered by the SOHO copyright notice. The Permission section of File:Comet SOHO-6.jpg contains an additional note, but this still doesn't include a full permission for commercial use. Some of the images are credited NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio at the given source, but since they are based on SOHO images we should probably discuss them as well.

Also affected:

  •  Delete all images taken by SOHO. Added to this request should be the videos in Category:Videos from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, for the same reason. Unfortunate but necessary without copyright evidence to the contrary. Huntster (t @ c) 23:23, 16 December 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Comment added the videos to the DR. --El Grafo (talk) 08:57, 17 December 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Comment Just noticed that most of the videos have been kept in a previous DR. NASA seems to claim the complete copyright of these montages of SOHO images (NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio, same as with some of the pictures above). Seems odd to me, since the single images they were created from are probably no different from the single images published at the SOHO website copyright wise. --El Grafo (talk) 09:04, 17 December 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Unfortunately, as we're increasingly discovering, NASA has a habit of claiming things like this. I spoke to someone in public relations the other day about SOHO images, and his reply was "Unless otherwise noted, any imagery released by NASA is in the public domain. You paid for it." This is a painfully over-simplistic version of reality. Huntster (t @ c) 11:06, 17 December 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Added sources for better overview. --El Grafo (talk) 09:21, 17 December 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  •  Delete all. These files may be re-uploaded in any Wikipedia as fair-use (example) St1995 18:39, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Note that File:Solar storm 2003-10-26 (SOHO-EIT, Ultraviolet 195 Å).png is not deleted. Both with DelReqHandler, and trying to delete the file manually, I get

"Error deleting file: The file "mwstore://local-multiwrite/local-deleted/5/m/z/5mzjl3u7tvvfk9p4jdaa2peke1atfbx.png" is in an inconsistent state within the internal storage backends"

I suggest that somebody try again tomorrow. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 03:46, 23 December 2013 (UTC) Same problem today. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 22:50, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
